Telling the Story of the ArtsA journey into telling the story of the arts with – You as a participant in the Telling.

Are you an artist, actor, writer, part of an arts organization, journalist, dancer, architect, designer, musician, poet, lover of the arts, arts groupie, funder of the arts? Then we need you!

Culture, the arts, seem to suffer in the telling. How do we know that? It can be seen in how we, as a community or nation, value the arts. When governments support manufacturing it is “stimulus” but support of the arts is often seen as a “handout.”

Is there a way to change the story? Is there a way to tell the story differently?

Yes it’s true, our artistic output is our story. More than 95% of the people in Ontario say agree that the arts enrich the quality of our lives, and 81% agree that the government should spend public dollars to support the arts. Still though, the story of the worth of the arts, and the selling of its benefits, often struggles in the telling.

Our half-day adventure will explore ways of telling our story – the story of the arts.

This presentation and discussion session aims to help Barrie artists and arts organizations to develop some key storylines regarding the arts in Barrie. Telling our story is the first step towards successfully marketing our cultural products.

Kelly Hill, arts researcher and President of Hill Strategies Research, will present information about arts attendance trends, audience engagement, arts education, the social and economic effects of culture, and culture in small and rural communities. Participants will discuss the research findings and how they might apply to identifying and relating some key stories on the arts in Barrie and the region.
