The Downtown Theatre Consultation Group needs your help. The purpose of the Consultation Group is to serve as a liaison between the City of Barrie’s Department of Culture and the groups or individuals that may wish to use the Downtown Community Theatre – people like you!

In order to understand and better serve the performance and exhibition requirements of the greater arts community of the Barrie area, we are assembling an arts contact list. And we need your help.

We would like to know more about your connection to the arts.  The information that you provide will be used to create Downtown Community Theatre recommendations in areas such as:
-          equitable and best use of all spaces in, on, and around the building;
-          usage policies for this performance space and any other performance spaces acquired by the City of Barrie;
-          trends and partnerships;
-          building design; and,
-          volunteers.
In addition to organized arts groups, we would also be grateful to hear from local residents who are associated with a public or private school, an arts-based teaching school, a studio or anywhere else arts are practiced.  Basically, we would like to hear from anyone who might require a quality performance or exhibition space for their visual art, dance performance, music production or performance, drama, comedy, performance art, storytelling, film screening, recital, or revue.

Please use the following link to access our quick survey that will introduce us to you or your organization, troupe, school, or studio.

Barrie’s culture department is taking over managing the Gryphon Theatre‘s performance space at Georgian College.With seats missing and many of those remaining in disrepair, fire alarm system deficiencies, as well as changeroom and heating system upgrades, Barrie is taking over leasing the theatre from the Gryphon Theatre Foundation.
“The Gryphon Theatre Foundation will be the primary user. What we’re trying to do is allow the foundation to provide expertise on the box office and performances,” said Barrie’s culture director Quammie Williams.
“We’ll allow them to produce and present amazing shows and allow the city to make the facility more efficient.”For Ward 1 Coun. Mike Ramsay, however, the issue is more than efficiency; it’s one of basic adequacy. Last weekend he bought a ticket to his daughter’s dance recital, and his assigned seat was missing.”There was an empty spot. Fortunately, people were able to squoosh down during the break. To me, the life/safety issues should be addressed as soon as possible, but when will the seats be replaced?” he said.
Barrie is looking to spend $413,000 in leasehold improvements for the 700-seat theatre; 400 of those seats must be replaced. The new agreement names the city as tenant and the college as landlord; rent is $1 per year for five years.However, the city will have to pay $82,600 each year for five years to cover the upgrades.Immediately, $12,000 in fire alarm upgrades and $7,000 in emergency lighting improvements are needed, as well as $15,000 for general lighting improvements. A new house lighting system costs another $75,000.Change room and control room improvements total $24,000, and heating and air conditioning upgrades add another $170,000 to the city’s bill.
Barrie estimates 400 of the seats will need to be replaced, at a cost of $225 each – for a total of $90,000. The carpet will also be redone, for another $20,000.The city also operates a small downtown theatre and is examining need for another performance space.
